Schenectady – Barbara J. Smith, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday August 5, 2026. Barbara was born in Jamaica, New York on February 28, 1935 to the late Emerson and Gladys (Vincent) Smith.

She graduated from Nott Terrace High School and went on to study at Ellis School of Nursing where she became a registered nurse. She worked as an RN for over 42 years at Ellis Hospital. She was one of the first nurses in the Nuclear Medical Radiation Oncology Unit when it was established at Ellis.

Barbara was a regular volunteer at the City Mission of Schenectady, and a dedicated member of her parish, she loved giving back to the community. She enjoyed stamping, card-making, reading, good food and spending time with her family.

Barbara was predeceased by her siblings Russell E. Smith and Roger Vaugn Smith as well as her nephew Douglas Smith. She is survived by her brother Lamonte C. Smith and her unofficial little sister Barbara Creddell, affectionately known to all as “Little Barbara,” her nieces; Mechelle Smith, Shaunelle Smith, Terry L.Rogers, Tanya D. Smith and her unofficial grandchildren Benji and Leo as well as many other family members and friends.

A Memorial Mass in her name will be held on Saturday, August 8, 2026 at 9am at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish, 2216 Rosa Road, Schenectady, NY 1230. (Flowers should be delivered to St. Kateri Tekakwitha)

Memorial Contributions may be made in Barbara’s name to the City Mission of Schenectady, 425 Hamilton St., Schenectady, NY 12305.
