Niskayuna – William F. Barton, 86, of Niskayuna, passed away peacefully at his home on December 21, 2025, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of 63 years, his three daughters and a grandson. He was predeceased by his brother, Kenneth Barton.

William (Bill) was born in Manhattan on August 23, 1939. He graduated from Massapequa High School in 1957. He received a BA in Economics with a minor in City and Regional Planning from Rutgers University in 1961. He received an MA in Urban Planning from Columbia University in 1965.

William was a long-time employee of New York State from 1965-2002 (37 years). From 1977-2002 he held positions as Assistant Director, Bureau Chief and Coastal Resources Specialist in the New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources.

Bill was a high school basketball player at Massapequa High School and went on to play basketball for Rutgers University.

Bill and his wife Betty enjoyed traveling. Some of their travels included trips to the Greek Islands, Hawaii, Grand Canyon, Zion, Monument Valley, New Orleans and many other places. They had a summer home in Newfoundland for 10 years and during that time travelled extensively throughout the province.

Bill was a kind man with a dry sense of humor that people remembered.
